Song: Chunari Chunari
Movie: Biwi No. 1 (1999)
Gosh, I miss Abhijeet. And Sushmita - what an alluring beauty.
I do not miss Salman’s outfits, and goofy dance moves; but alas, this is why we love the golden era of the 90s!
Teri Chunariya - Hello Brother (1994)
Yes, I still blast this on high volume…LOVE Kumar Sanu and Alka!

Fevicol Se - Dabangg 2 (Dec. 21, 2012)
Mamta Sharma! I love the way she infuses her songs with attitude and verve; definitely reminds me of my girl Sunidhi Chauhan - such powerful female voices!
Despite my best efforts, I cannot resist the item song-siren; I thought Munni was fantastic; and now I’m stuck on Fevicol! [shakes fist at Sajid-Wajid]
Dagabaaz Re - Dabanng 2 (releases December 21)
My errant musings:
I am so tired of Salman, a grown-a** man, acting like a preening IDIOT, recycling the same moves over and over and over. I will forever be perplexed as to why people find him appealing in the least bit…???
I appreciate the traditional stylings of this song (real instruments, anyone?), but when the song started I was disappointed to hear RFAK, yet again. Granted, his songs are always incredibly beautiful (I am still in love with Tere Mast Mast Do Nain) but he NEVER, ever suits the actor for which he is singing, and it annoys me. I should just accept that producers don’t bother with voice-to-actor matching anymore (see: Shah Rukh in Jab Tak Hai Jaan), but I can’t resist the urge to sigh with disappointment every time. However, I get that they’re going for an evocative repeat here, since Shreya is back too.
Positive notes: I like that Sonakshi is back as the love interest (?). It is all too common to replace the previous female with a flashier model, so it is nice to see her again, looking so lovely and natural in the setting.
Mashallah - Ek Tha Tiger (Aug 15, 2012)
I was skeptical about this because…Salman (ugh!), but then I remembered that his movies usually have awesome soundtracks because….Sajid-Wajid!
They’ve only guest-composed this one song, but it might be the best on the album (no offense to Sohail Sen, who does excellent work otherwise)!
Kareena speaking at the India Today Conclave 2012. Open photos in a new tab to see the full version. Read excerpts from her interview here and here.
Her honesty is very endearing here; I am glad to know that she is aware of Bollywood’s backward sensibilities. However, she is largely responsible for her own movie choices! I am sure no one forced her to do the Golmaals, Kambakkht Ishq, Ra.One, Bodyguard, or any of the other “token-hot girl” crap. As a seasoned actress now, with the prestige of the name Kapoor, you would think she would have enough power and clout to demand better roles or checks as a popular (and talented) female actress.
It’s not enough to just declare these wrongs, you have to work to right them as well. And if Kareena Kapoor can’t get the roles and paychecks that she wants, what hope is there for the lesser actresses?
Vidya Balan’s success story has given actresses the hope for a brighter tomorrow in the Indian film industry. But they have a long way to go, says Kareena Kapoor adding that she will fight for equal pay cheques in filmdom.

WHOA! Bebo is very honest. I love it!

Humko Pyar Hua - Ready (2011)
This is why I love KK. And Tulsi Kumar adds such a sweetness to the pairing.
Absolutely beautiful!
Can we get more SEL soundtracks like this, please??
Can we have more songs like this, please?? Wow…

Song: Yeh Raat Aur Yeh Doori
Movie: Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
Love this! SPB and Asha Bhosle are fantastic here; and Aamir and Salman made the funniest pair, 17 years ago.
So Preity has all but given up on making movies and is heading to our TV screens/youtubes in the meantime. Above is the episode featuring a Bodyguard-promoting Salman Khan.
I would have never expected her to host a TV show of any kind (though she is quite accomplished in other areas besides acting), so I must admit a talk show is a bold move. However, upon viewing the above episode, I was left with more feelings of confusion and bewilderment.
For one, Preity comes off a bit childish (though cute) and not at all like the strong heroines that she plays on the big screen; and certainly not like the outspoken figure that she is in the media. Maybe she just gets all “giggling school girl” in the presence of Salman (who is really NOT a bad guy, why is everyone afraid of him?)?
For two, is that really her home? It clearly looks like a giant set! And where is the audience? It certainly appears that the two celebs are having an intimate conversation, but then the flow is interrupted by random skits and acts meant for a live audience. Maybe I am just not used to the format of Indian TV?
Anyway, this is an interesting turn for Preity. Despite the palpable awkwardness, I was entertained and enlightened about Salman. Ergo, I am looking forward to getting up close and personal with any other of her BFFs.

Confession: I’m kinda taken with this song from Ready.
I blame Neeraj (I like him more and more with each song I hear!) and Amrita Kak, because despite my best efforts to not like anything Salman does, I can’t help singing along to this one.
Really, the jerks to blame are Pritam and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya. They did a fairly good job with the melody and lyrics (translation here).
There is a trend of random English words in recent item songs (Neeraj mentions “facebook” in the second half)- it used to bother me before, but I largely enjoy it now (see: Dance Maare Re and Badey Dilwala). I guess I can accept the lingo-fusion when it’s not especially grating.
I also like the reference to “Munni” (from Salman’s previous blockbuster, geez!) and “Sheila”.
So indeed, I give in. This song is 100% FUN!
